As the representative for the City of Hamilton, I was recently joined by municipal leaders across Canada to discuss the goals and objectives of Canada’s municipal governments at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) September Board Meeting.
Many discussions at committee meetings focused on FCM’s election campaign and an approach to targeted engagement with the new government on committee priorities. We launched our full platform of recommendations— buildingbetterlives.ca —calling on all parties to empower the governments closest to Canadians, zeroing in on issues such as better core infrastructure, modern transit, affordable housing, new protection from climate change, and new tools for rural, northern and remote communities.
We also passed several resolutions to press the federal government on key issues important to Canadian municipalities. This ranges from action that would boost access to harm reduction to safely treat drug abuse and the Opioid crisis..to making municipal administrative building projects eligible for funding under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
