Flamborough residents east of Highway 6 can now use an online form to request bulk curbside garbage pickup.
The pilot project, which is only running in Ward 15, allows requests to be made for furniture, mattress and box springs wrapped in plastic, and carpets. Metal, appliances such as washers, dryers fridges and stoves, as well as household hazardous wastes are not accepted for pickup.
Residents can request a bulk pickup by visiting https://www.hamilton.ca/garbage-recycling/garbage-bulk-items/bulk-items-and-furniture.
Ward 15 Coun. Judi Partridge said will allow residents great flexibility in planning for bulk pickup.
“I know for myself, whenever I think, ‘I really should have put that out at the curb,’ it will be Sunday night,” she said. “You need to get in there ahead of time, but by the time you think of it again, another week has gone by.
“This will allow people to put it in online and have it picked up.”
Partridge said Flamborough used to have regular bulk pickup, but now people will often put out items on the curb, which will then just sit there.
“I’ve really been pushing for something we can pilot in Flamborough,” she said. “It’s just another efficiency and we’re always looking for efficiencies — especially around waste pickup.”
Partridge said the bulk pickup option is part of a greater push by the city to allow residents to complete more city-based tasks — such as paying for dog licenses — online. She noted those who don’t have internet access or aren’t computer savvy can still call the city to have their bulk items picked up.
“There have been requests for a more efficient way of bulk collection,” she said.
Partridge said she expects the pilot — depending on how it works in Flamborough — to eventually be expanded to the entire city.
“It may be phases, where they’ll do Dundas and Ancaster next or they’ll do Stoney Creek,” she said.
The city is looking for feedback on the use of the online form and the experience of requesting curbside pickup. Those with feedback are asked to contact Partridge at firstname.lastname@example.org or Angela Storey at email@example.com.
