Written by Trustee Penny Deathe, a message to parents of graduates:
We know the importance of recognizing our students for their accomplishments, especially in a year where they’ve had unprecedented change and challenge. They’ve made it to a new milestone and we’re so proud of all they’ve accomplished. In the past, my favourite time of year was when I was able to attend graduation ceremonies and celebrate with parents and families. This year, students have had to work hard at adapting to new ways to learn, communicate and socialize. We worry about the stress they’ve been under and the impact to their mental health. Trying to find ways to honour and celebrate our graduates has been a challenge as we make plans amidst new guidelines and safety requirements. Many parents are making plans of their own and being creative, which is so heart-warming to see.
For the latest updates on HWDSB graduation ceremony guidelines, please go to https://www.hwdsb.on.ca/blog/secondary-school-graduation-update/. Schools will also be communicating to parents on what each school has planned. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school. I know School Councils are also trying to keep parents updated so, if you’re not already, you may want to check out their social media pages.
Congratulations to all our graduates!
