It is heartbreaking and makes me angry to hear the disgusting damage done at the Waterdown Union Cemetery which is one of our important heritage cemeteries.
An update, Police are aware and are working with staff to complete an investigation. Staff are assessing the damage to start repairs – a contractor will be on site tomorrow to remove the graffiti on the monuments. Cemetery staff will also be on site to repair the monuments that have been knocked over. Some rehabilitation work may be necessary to some of the stones knocked off the foundations.
The second incident last night of spray painting anarchist symbols is even more troubling and has also been reported to police for investigation. Beginning tonight, a Corporate Security team will dispatch security officers to the cemetery to deter any further vandalism.
What I just cannot fathom is why someone would want to do such disrespectful damage at a cemetery of all places. Very heartbreaking.
